Separation Technology

8Working Principle

A benchtop centrifuge separates materials by rotating samples at controlled speed around a central axis. The spinning rotor creates centrifugal force, causing denser particles to move outward faster than lighter components. Particles collect as a pellet at the bottom or outer side of the tube, while lighter liquid remains as the supernatant. The actual force applied to the sample depends on both RPM and the distance between the sample and rotor centre.

1. RotationRotor turns samples at the programmed rotational speed.
2. ForceCentrifugal force moves denser material outward.
3. SedimentationParticles form a pellet while lighter fluid remains above.
4. Rotor GeometryFixed-angle and swing-bucket designs affect pellet formation.
5. CoolingRefrigerated models control chamber temperature during operation.

Fixed-Angle Rotor

Tubes remain at a constant angle. Suitable for high-speed separation, cell pelleting, DNA/RNA preparation, protein precipitation and microtube processing.

Swing-Bucket Rotor

Buckets move outward to a horizontal position. Suitable for blood tubes, conical tubes, density-gradient work, microplates and larger-volume samples.

Instrument Design

9Construction and Design

External Housing

Powder-coated metal or moulded laboratory-grade exterior. Final material and chemical resistance are to be confirmed.

Centrifuge Chamber

Stainless-steel or coated chamber for durability, cleaning access and routine laboratory operation.

Drive System

Brushless induction or equivalent motor for controlled acceleration, stable speed and reduced maintenance.

Rotor System

Supports fixed-angle, swing-bucket, microtube, conical-tube, blood-tube, PCR, hematocrit and microplate rotor options.

Lid and Locking

Safety locking prevents opening while the rotor is moving. Motorized lid operation may be available.

Controller

May include RPM/RCF setting, time, temperature, rotor selection, acceleration, braking, programs and service messages.

Refrigeration System

Refrigerated versions may include compressor cooling, pre-cooling, chamber sensor and condenser ventilation.

Adapters and Buckets

Tube adapters, sealed lids, buckets and carriers are selected according to sample vessel and protocol.

Operational Protection

10Safety and Compliance

Always balance opposing tubes by mass, use compatible vessels, do not exceed rated rotor or tube limits, inspect rotors for damage and use sealed containment accessories when processing potentially infectious samples.
Compliance and certification details: To be confirmed for the selected ALC-SCIENTIFIC model. CE, IVD, clinical-use, biocontainment or other certification claims must not be published without valid model-specific documentation.
